![]() Even Shetterly was surprised to learn of their existence. Until recently, few people knew that there were black women working as computers. In 1958, they moved from planes to spacecraft as NACA became NASA. They ran the numbers for engineers constructing new and improved airplanes at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). These women were hired as computers during and following World War II. In it, author Margot Lee Shetterly follows Vaughn, Johnson, Jackson and other black women in their careers at Langley. The movie is based on the book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. ![]() Their skills in math and engineering helped to put astronaut John Glenn into orbit around the Earth in 1962. ![]() Henson and Janelle MonĂ¡e play these roles, respectively, in the movie.)
